Hello, friends. Welcome to the newsletter from TableCakes Productions, a new L.A.-based, woman-owned podcast network operated by journalists Drew Mackie and Katherine Spiers.
Our goal with TableCakes is to, you know, save journalism. No big deal.
We joke, but we are providing a platform for underrepresented voices and building our slate of shows to mimic a newspaper, but in audio form: eventually we’ll cover every topic a paper would. We’ve started with food, the cannabis business, and entertainment: TV (more TV), movies, and video games. Women in business, Long Beach music, and dark tales of early Los Angeles are coming soon.
We anticipate growing slowly, as we’re not seeking investors. The subjects of this New York Times article explain it well: fast growth can often lead to enormous flameout. TableCakes is happy to be the tortoise.
Check Us Out
If you’re in L.A. tonight, go see Tony Rodriguez, co-host of You Have To Watch This Movie, at his monthly Upright Citizens Brigade variety show, Spanish Aqui Presents. Welcome February with some laughs, surely you deserve it! Tickets here.
And if you’re in Portland, Oregon on February 16, catch the Smart Mouth live show at Listen Up Portland. Host Katherine Spiers and guest Mohanad Elshieky will have trivia, history, snacks, and jokes for you. You’ll love it! Tickets here.
You Have to Watch This Movie finished its first season in January, with the final episode featuring guest Nicole Byer — comedian and host of Netflix's Nailed It as well as her own podcast, Why Won't You Date Me. Listen to Tony and Drew talk with Nicole about her movie pick: 1993's What’s Love Got to Do With It and why it might be the best biopic ever.
Hayley Fox, host of Green & Gold, is becoming California’s top cannabis expert. Here’s her work this month:
KCRW: L.A.’s social equity program.
LA Magazine: Legal weed’s low revenues.
Vice: Cannabis workers are unionizing.

As it happens, Hayley is going on leave and TableCakes needs a Los Angeles-based, fill-in host for Green & Gold, for a month or so. Journalists with a business, cannabis and/or civil rights beat background would be ideal. If that’s you, send some clips to tablecakesproductions@gmail.com.
